Collin County Epidemiology

Several Texas laws (under the Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Act, Health and Safety Code, Chapters 81, 84, and 87) require specific information regarding notifiable conditions to be provided to the Texas Department of Health (TDH). Health care providers, hospital, laboratories, schools and others are required to report patients who are suspected of having a notifiable condition. (Chapter 97, Title 25, Texas Administrative Code)

Notifiable Conditions in Texas


The following conditions must be reported IMMEDIATELY by telephone:

  • Acute paralytic poliomyelitis
  • Anthrax
  • Botulism (Food Borne)
  • Diphtheria
  • Invasive Haemophilus influenza Type B
  • Invasive Meningococcal Infection
  • Measles (Rubeola)
  • Pertussis
  • Plague
  • Rabies (Human)
  • Smallpox
  • Viral Hemorrhagic Fever
  • Yellow Fever
  • Outbreaks of exotic diseases, unusual groups of illnesses

Conditions that must be reported WITHIN ONE WORKING DAY:

  • Acute Hepatitis A
  • Brucellosis
  • Q Fever
  • Rubella
  • Tularemia
  • Vibrio Infections
  • Tuberculosis

Conditions that must be reported WITHIN ONE WEEK:

Infectious Disease:
  • Amebiasis
  • Botulism (Infant)
  • Campylobacteriosis
  • Chickenpox (Varicella)
  • Creutzfeldt-Jakob
    Disease (CJD)
  • Cryptosporidiosis
  • Hemolytic Uremic
    Syndrome(HUS)
  • Hepatitis B, D, E and
    unspecified
  • Hepatitis C
    (newly diagnosed)
  • Legionellosis
  • Listeriosis
  • Lyme Disease
  • Malaria
  • Meningitis (specify type)
  • Mumps
  • Cyclosporidiosis
  • Dengue
  • Ehrlichiosis
  • Encephalitis
  • E. Coli
  • Hansens' Disease
    Leprosy)
  • Relapsing fever
  • Salmonellosis (inc. typhoid)
  • Shigellosis
  • Spotted fever group
    rickettsioses
  • Tetanus
  • Trichinosis
  • Typhus
  • Yersiniosis
Injuries
  • Drowning/near drowning
 
Occupational Diseases & Elevated Blood Lead Levels:
  • Abestosis
  • Lead (adult elevated blood)
  • Lead (childhood elevated blood)
  • Pesticide poisoning, acute, occupational
  • Silicosis

Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  • Chanchroid
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • HIV/AIDS new diagnosis
  • Syphillis

Unusual Expressions of Diseases
All unusual expressions of diseases are legally required to be reported to Collin County Health Care Services as soon as the clinician recognizes the expression as unusual.

Dog Bites
While not legally required to be reported to Collin County Health Care Services, the Department of Epidemiology requests that physicians report all cases of dog bites as soon as possible in order to help control any outbreaks of rabies or other diseases.
